Newsom Proclaims Juneteenth National Freedom Day
State workers in California will not have Juneteenth off as a paid holiday.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday and state holiday in several states.
Governor Gavin Newsom has proclaimed June 15 as Juneteenth National Freedom Day.
This proclamation comes despite the fact that Juneteenth is not one of the 11 paid holidays that all state workers have off in California.
Juneteenth commemorates the date, June 19, 1865, that enslaved people in Texas finally learned that the Civil War had ended and that they were free.
