Korean War: Invasion and Counterinvasion (1950-51)
Early North Korean Gains
When the Korean War erupted in 1950, the North Korean People's Army (KPA) swiftly overwhelmed South Korean forces, capturing Seoul within a matter of weeks. However, their initial successes came at a heavy price.
Losses and Reinforcements
In the opening months of the war, the KPA lost a staggering 70,000 of their initial 100,000 troops. To bolster their ranks, they received reinforcements from southern Korean guerrillas based at Haeju.
Invasion of South Korea
On June 25, 1950, approximately 75,000 KPA soldiers breached the 38th parallel, igniting the Korean War. The invasion aimed to unify Korea under communist rule.
