SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea fired suspected short-range missiles into the sea in its latest weapons test, according to South Korean military officials, as the country's leader, Kim Jong Un, supervised the launches.
The launches come amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with the United States and South Korea accusing North Korea of providing artillery shells, ballistic missiles, and other military equipment to Russia in violation of international sanctions.
North Korea has been conducting a series of missile tests in recent months, including the launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in March that was capable of reaching the United States.
The latest launches appear to be part of North Korea's ongoing efforts to develop and improve its weapons capabilities. The country has been pursuing a nuclear weapons program for decades, and its missile tests are seen as a way to demonstrate its military strength and deter potential adversaries.
The launches have also drawn international condemnation, with the United States and its allies calling on North Korea to stop its weapons development and return to dialogue aimed at denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
